Dream Journal Ultimate has been on the App Store since January 2014, and its developer is still shipping quickly: version 2026.9.24 came out on 26 September 2026, its second release that month. It has a 4.5 rating from 562 reviews, it's in twelve languages, and it's free for as many dreams as you care to write. We make Dreamlock, so weigh our view accordingly. Here's where each app wins.
Who should pick which?
Pick Dream Journal Ultimate if you want a free, full-featured journal that follows you between iPhone, Android and a computer. It also suits you if you like the idea of reading other people's dreams on a community wall, or want structured lucid-dreaming lessons.
Pick Dreamlock if you want your dream life kept strictly to yourself. That means no account, no feed, the voice never leaving your phone, and a Face ID lock. You'd also want the morning to be effortless: speak the dream with your eyes closed, and read a clean, painted dream card at breakfast.
What does Dream Journal Ultimate do well?
Per its listing and website, it takes a dream however it arrives. You can type it, or speak it, and it transcribes and tidies the scattered version into a readable entry. It offers what it calls AI interpretation and AI-generated images of your dreams. Its newest features, Dream Insights and Dream Companion, work across your whole journal. Insights surfaces the symbols, figures, emotions and places that keep returning. Companion is a chat that answers from the dreams you wrote and shows the entries it drew on.
Around that: a symbol dictionary its site puts at more than 12,000 entries, a Lucid Dreaming Academy with step-by-step technique lessons, reality-check alarms, tags, reminders, and a PIN, Face ID or Touch ID lock. The Dream Wall lets you share dreams publicly and see similar dreams from other people.
Is Dream Journal Ultimate free?
Yes. Unlimited entries are free, and the one paid item listed in the US is a $2.99 "Support Dream Journal Ultimate" subscription. The listing doesn't spell out which features that subscription unlocks, so check inside the app.
Dreamlock's free tier gives you unlimited dream capture, three fully interpreted dream cards a week and ten questions, with no time limit. Dreamlock Plus is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial on the annual plan, and interprets and paints every dream.
Which is more private?
Dream Journal Ultimate's App Store privacy label is "Data Not Linked to You." It covers your email address (including for the developer's own marketing), usage data and diagnostics. Its site says your journal can be locked with a PIN or biometrics and that cloud sync is encrypted. Its whole design includes a social layer: sharing is optional, but it's there.
Dreamlock has no social layer and no accounts at all. Dreams are recorded and transcribed on the phone, so the voice never leaves it. The dream's text goes to our servers over an encrypted connection only to write the card, and it isn't stored there or used for training or ads. Optional iCloud sync keeps an encrypted copy in your own iCloud. More in our privacy policy.
Both answer questions about your own dreams — how do they differ?
They're close here, and it's fair to say so. Dream Journal Ultimate's Dream Companion and Dreamlock's questions both answer from your own journal and show which dreams the answer came from. Where Dreamlock differs is the reading of each dream. It uses three registers: what named traditions say (always attributed), what psychologists notice, and one question to sit with. It never makes predictions, and every interpreted dream gets its own painting. Over time it builds a personal symbol index that shows how often each symbol appears in your dreams, and alongside what. If a dream keeps coming back, our guide to recurring dreams explains why that index is useful.

The honest bottom line
If you want free, cross-platform and social, Dream Journal Ultimate is the better choice, and it's a mature, actively developed one. If you want a private, account-free vault that turns a sleepy voice note into something beautiful and readable, that's Dreamlock. And if you're still deciding, the full roundup of dream journal apps for iPhone puts both next to Oniri, Dreams, Dreamy, DreamApp and DreamKeeper.
