The papers are on the table, the pen is in your hand, and you can't remember agreeing to any of it. Divorce dreams are startling mostly because of who has them: people in steady marriages, people who have never married, children of long-divorced parents. They are rarely about a divorce.

| Divorcing and feeling sad | A stranger in your mirror as separation, averted by care | Yume handan 1906 |
| A couple fighting | A married couple fighting as about to reconcile | Zhougong 1880 |
What does it mean to dream about divorce?
Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) is one of the few old books with an entry under the word itself. To dream of being divorced, it said, "denotes that you are not satisfied with your companion, and should cultivate a more congenial atmosphere in the home life. It is a dream of warning." For women, Miller read it as a single life through the infidelity of lovers. The first line is unusually practical for Miller: it reads the dream as a comment on the marriage as it is, and a nudge to improve it.
The Japanese books get there through images. Karasawa Shōkaku's 1908 Yume handan jikkensho read a husband and wife quarrelling over a hairpin as presiding over parting, and a stranger reflected in one's mirror as a husband and wife separating. Its 1906 predecessor, a Japanese translation of the Chinese Menglin xuanjie, has the same mirror entry, marked unlucky, and adds a line that matters: the separation could be prevented, it said, if the dreamer behaved with care. A divorce dream, even in a book of omens, was a warning one could answer.
The Chinese Zhougong dream book (1880 print), the list many Japanese entries descend from, is more surprising. Its chapter on married couples reads a husband and wife fighting as a couple about to make peace, and a husband and wife bowing formally to each other as a couple about to separate. Politeness, in that reading, was the worrying sign.
What happened in the dream
These are readings from the old dream books, reported as history; no dream is a forecast.
What does it mean to dream of getting divorced?
You are the one signing, sometimes calmly, sometimes in tears. Miller's entry reads exactly this scene as dissatisfaction to be mended at home. The 1908 Japanese book has an odder line nearby: merely meeting one's wife in a dream, it said, also presides over parting. Psychologists read your own divorce in a dream as a commitment being weighed. Wedding dreams tend to come when a binding choice is near; divorce dreams tend to come when one is being reconsidered, and the choice in question is often not the marriage at all.
What does it mean to dream of your partner asking for a divorce?
They say it over breakfast, or in a hallway, or in a language you don't speak. Miller's "Husband" entry is the closest scene: a woman dreaming that her husband is leaving her, without her understanding why, was read as bitterness between them followed by "an unexpected reconciliation". The 1906 Japanese book reads a wife marrying another man as a household declining and a change of heart. Psychologists hear fear rather than fact. Dreams of being left often carry less about the partner than about the dreamer's own sense of security, and they cluster when something feels as though it is shifting.
The people around it
What does it mean to dream of your parents divorcing?
You are a child again, or an adult at a kitchen table, and your parents tell you they are separating. No old book cited here has an entry for parents divorcing. The nearest is the 1908 Japanese book's line on fighting with the members of one's household, which it read as a whole family parting. The dream is common among adults whose parents are happily married, and among those whose parents divorced decades ago. Psychologists read it as a dream about the foundations: the original sense of home, and whether it still holds you up. It often arrives when the dreamer's own adult life is being rebuilt.
What does it mean to dream of divorcing and feeling sad?
The paperwork is done and the grief arrives afterwards, heavy and quiet. The 1906 Japanese dream book's mirror entry fits here: a stranger reflected in your mirror meant a couple growing apart, unless the dreamer took care. The same book has a more hopeful entry next to it, a broken mirror still showing a person, which it read as divorcing once and tying the bond again later. The Zhougong list's fighting couple, about to reconcile, belongs to the same family of readings. Psychologists notice that sadness in a divorce dream usually measures attachment: the dream lets you feel how much something matters before anything is lost.
What does a divorce dream mean psychologically?
Psychologists read divorce dreams as dreams about commitment. The marriage in the dream usually stands for any bond the dreamer has agreed to: a relationship, but also a job, a city, a promise, a version of themselves. The mood of the dream is often the dreamer's unspoken verdict on that commitment: relief, dread, guilt, or a strange calm.
The partner in a divorce dream also tends to carry a quality more than a biography. When the dream leaves someone feeling abandoned, it often tracks the dreamer's sense of worth or the feeling that something is precarious; when the dreamer is the one leaving, it often tracks a need for more room. In the Jungian reading, marriage imagery stands for inner union, two parts of the self agreeing, and a dream of divorce can mark two parts of the self pulling apart over a decision.
The useful step is to ask what in waking life is being renegotiated. For the same question from the other side, see dreams about weddings; for endings outside marriage, dreams about breaking up.
A question to sit with
Which commitment in your life are you quietly reconsidering, and what would you want to keep even if everything else changed?
A dream book can tell you that Miller called divorce a dream of warning. It can't tell you why yours come in the weeks when work keeps you away from home, or after every visit to your in-laws. That shows only when your dreams are kept together over time. If you're unsure whether reading dream meanings helps at all, we wrote an honest answer: should you stop reading dream meanings? Dreamlock, on the App Store for iPhone, is a private dream journal: it listens to your dream, paints it, and notices when the same scenes return.
