You wake with the warm, slightly embarrassing glow of having spent the night with someone you barely speak to by day. Crush dreams are among the most common people look up, and among the most tempting to over-read: surely, the thinking goes, a dream this vivid must mean something about them.

What does it mean to dream about your crush?

The old dream books had no word for a crush. What they had was the sweetheart, the lover and, in Japan, the person one longs for, and they read those figures with the confidence of their age. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) was cheerful about the first sight: a lover who dreams that his sweetheart is lovely in person and character, Miller wrote, can expect "a speedy and favorable marriage". A sweetheart who appeared pleasant and attractive he read as "a joy to your pride"; one who appeared otherwise, as discontent with one's choice before the wedding.

Miller was far less kind to the dreams of being pursued. "Bad, bad, will be the fate of the woman who dreams of being courted," his entry on courtship begins, going on to promise disappointment after hope. The two readings sit side by side in the same book: the beloved seen clearly was good news, the chase itself was not.

In Japan, the 1908 Yume handan jikkensho by Karasawa Shōkaku has a handful of lines that come close. It read running through the rain with an umbrella as a sign of meeting "the one you long for" (思ふ人), and the call of the lesser cuckoo as longing for someone far away. Neither entry names a crush, but the feeling is unmistakably the same: wanting, at a distance.

The same book's chapter on human affairs is blunter about love that has slipped its rules. A man and woman running off to marry somewhere else it read as trouble arising from passion; an agreed promise of marriage, by contrast, as a good match. Like Miller, the Meiji author was mostly interested in where longing led, to a wedding or to scandal, and hardly at all in the longing itself.

The popular idea that a person who appears in your dream must be thinking of you is old and widespread. It is not in Miller, and it is not in the Meiji book; the readings below report what those books do say, and then what psychologists notice, which is usually more useful.

What happened between you

These are readings from the old dream books, reported as history; no dream is a forecast.

What does it mean to dream of talking to your crush?

The easy conversation you never quite manage awake: you talk, they laugh, nothing is awkward. No book cited here has an entry for talking to a beloved. The 1908 Japanese dream book reads the nearest scene, greeting someone you have not seen for a long time, as joy close at hand. It reads greeting someone you meet every day with exaggerated politeness, oddly, as parting from them. Psychologists usually hear rehearsal: the mind practising a closeness that waking life hasn't made room for yet, often after a day when you saw the person and said very little.

What does it mean to dream of dating your crush?

You are together, and in the dream it feels settled, ordinary, already true. The 1908 Japanese dream book read the closest scene, an agreed promise of marriage, as a good match for anyone still unmarried and long life for those who already had a spouse. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary would have been warier of the courtship itself, as its entry on being courted shows. The modern reading is about wish and fit: the dream tries the relationship on. What it felt like inside the dream, easy or anxious, often says more about what you want from closeness than about the person.

What does it mean to dream your crush ignores you or is cold?

They walk past, read your message and don't answer, look through you. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary, under "Love", read love that fails or is not returned as despondency over a different question altogether: whether to change one's way of living, or to marry and trust the future. That is an unexpectedly modern reading. Psychologists hear the fear of rejection rehearsed in a safe place, and often a wider worry about being overlooked that the crush has simply given a face.

What does it mean to dream of your crush with someone else?

They are laughing with another person, holding someone else's hand. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary, under "Rival", read being outwitted by a rival as negligence and love of personal ease, and being the successful rival as good for one's advancement. The dream rarely has much to do with the other person. It tends to come when you feel you are hesitating while life moves on without you. For the sharper version inside a relationship, see dreams about your partner cheating.

Old crushes and missed meetings

What does it mean to dream of a crush from years ago?

Someone you liked at fifteen, unchanged, appears as if no time had passed. The 1908 Japanese dream book read greeting a person you had not seen for a long time as joy arriving soon; it has no line for a past love as such. Psychologists read the old crush much as they read an ex: the person usually stands for what that time held, a version of you, a feeling, a lightness. These dreams cluster at transitions, a move, a new job, a birthday that ends in zero. For the closer relative, see dreams about your ex.

What does it mean to dream you can't reach your crush?

You set out to meet them and the train stops, the street loops back, the phone won't connect. The 1908 Japanese dream book offers the gentlest reading in this whole family: running through the rain with an umbrella, it says, means meeting the one you long for. The call of the lesser cuckoo it read as longing for someone far away. Psychologists hear frustrated effort, the same machinery as dreams of being late or lost, attached this time to a person. The dream often comes when contact depends on chance rather than choice.

What does a crush dream mean psychologically?

Psychologists are consistent and calm about romantic dreams: they are ordinary, near-universal, and rarely confessions. The dream partner usually carries a quality, closeness, aliveness, acceptance, attention, rather than a literal plan for that person. Freud read much of dream life through desire, and a crush dream is desire in its most hopeful form. The modern framing adds that dreams do memory and emotional work: the person you thought about all day is the person the sleeping mind keeps handling at night.

The useful move is to separate the person from what they stand for. A dream friend, psychologists note, often carries qualities more than biography, and a crush works the same way: their confidence, their ease, the way they seem to belong. Sometimes the dream is reaching for that quality in your own life. When the crush is someone barely known, a colleague glimpsed in the lift, the figure is closer to a projection, a screen for what you admire or want recognized in yourself.

Crush dreams also grow stronger when the feeling has nowhere to go. A crush that can't be acted on, a friend's partner, a teacher, someone who moved away, often returns at night precisely because the day gives it no outlet. Psychologists read this without alarm: the dream lets a feeling be felt fully and safely, and many people find these dreams quieten once the feeling has been acknowledged, said aloud to a friend or simply written down. The celebrity crush is the same mechanism at full volume: the famous face is a screen, and the useful question is what that person specifically stands for.

Mood is the best guide. Warm crush dreams tend to come when life feels open; anxious ones, when you feel unseen. Neither is information about the other person. For the moment two dream figures finally close the gap, see dreams about kissing.

A question to sit with

What do you feel when you imagine being close to this person, and where else in your life would you like to feel that?

A dream book can tell you that a Meiji author read an umbrella in the rain as meeting the one you long for. It can't tell you why your crush turns up only on Sunday nights, or always in your old school corridor. That shows only when your dreams are recorded and kept together. Dreamlock, on the App Store for iPhone, is a private dream journal: it listens to your dream, paints it, reads it with the old books, the psychologists and one question, and notices when the same person keeps coming back.
