It is often the briefest moment of the dream and the one you remember all day: a face coming closer, and then the kiss. Kissing dreams are among the most searched, and the question behind them is nearly always the same: does this mean something about the person?

What does it mean to dream about kissing?
Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) gave the kiss one of its longest entries and read it almost entirely by circumstance. Children kissing meant "happy reunions in families". Married people kissing each other showed "that harmony is prized in the home life". Kissing an enemy meant advancing towards reconciliation with an angry friend. The lover's kiss depended on the light: "To kiss your sweetheart in the dark, denotes dangers and immoral engagements," Miller wrote, while kissing her in the light meant honorable intentions. Kissing "illicitly" he read as "dangerous past-times", seeing a rival kiss one's sweetheart as the danger of losing her esteem, and a kiss on the neck as a lack of self-control. Few entries in the book are so concerned with exactly where, when and whom.
The Japanese books are silent on the kiss itself. Neither the 1908 Yume handan jikkensho by Karasawa Shōkaku nor the 1906 Japanese translation of the Chinese Menglin xuanjie has an entry for it. What they have is the embrace. The 1908 book read a man and woman holding each other without disorder as a sign of joy, and the same embrace gone too far as very ill-omened. The Chinese Zhougong dream book (1880 print), from which many Meiji lines descend, read embracing a woman as a happy event, and a wife embracing her husband as great gain and joy.
So the old books agree on one thing: a dream of closeness was read by its setting. Light or dark, spouse or stranger, restraint or excess. The modern reading keeps the same instinct and moves it inside: how did the kiss feel?
Who you kissed
These are readings from the old dream books, reported as history; no dream is a forecast.
What does it mean to dream of kissing your crush?
The moment you have imagined awake, finally happening, and feeling exactly right. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary read kissing a sweetheart in the light as honorable intentions and in the dark as dangers; it also read a young woman seeing her lover kiss another as disappointed hopes of marriage. Psychologists hear wish and rehearsal: the mind trying out a closeness that waking life hasn't offered yet. The dream usually follows days when the person was much on your mind. More on the person behind it in dreams about your crush.
What does it mean to dream of kissing a stranger?
A face you have never seen, and no sense in the dream that it is odd. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary was severe: kissing a strange woman showed "loose morals and perverted integrity". In the Jungian reading the stranger is the unmet self, qualities or impulses not yet recognized as your own, so a kiss with a stranger can be read as an embrace of something new in you: more daring, more open, less guarded. Whether the kiss felt welcome or alarming usually tracks how you feel about that new part.
What does it mean to dream of kissing your ex?
Familiar, and confusing on waking. No book cited here has an entry for it. Psychologists are steady on this one: dreaming of an ex rarely signals wanting them back. The ex usually stands for what the relationship held, a version of you, a feeling, an unfinished lesson, and such dreams cluster at transitions, a new relationship, an anniversary, an ending of any kind. See dreams about your ex for the whole family.
How the kiss happened
What does it mean to dream of being kissed?
You did not lean in; someone else did. No book cited here describes being kissed rather than kissing. Psychologists read the difference as agency: being kissed in a dream often carries the wish to be chosen, noticed or wanted, especially in seasons when you feel overlooked. Who kissed you matters less than whether you welcomed it. An unwelcome kiss tends to belong with dreams about boundaries, someone in waking life who is closer than you would like.
What does it mean to dream of a kiss on the cheek?
Light, affectionate, almost formal. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary has no entry for the cheek; its only body-part kiss is the neck, which it read as "passionate inclinations and weak mastery of self". The cheek kiss reads very differently today: warmth without romance, the greeting of a friend or family member. Miller's line on kissing one's mother, read as success and affection from friends, is the closest old echo. Psychologists hear acceptance, a wish to be held in regard rather than desired.
What does a kissing dream mean psychologically?
Psychologists are calm about romantic and sexual dreams: they are ordinary, near-universal, and rarely confessions. The dream partner usually carries a quality, closeness, aliveness, power, acceptance, rather than literal desire for that person. A kiss is the most compressed version of that: one gesture that says "I want to be close to this." What it was reaching for matters more than who appeared in it.
That is why people kiss unlikely partners in dreams: a colleague, a friend's partner, a celebrity, someone they dislike. The dream friend, psychologists note, often carries qualities more than biography; a kiss with them can be the mind drawing their confidence or calm closer. Mood is the guide. Tender kiss dreams tend to come when closeness is flourishing or badly missed; uneasy ones, when it feels risky. If the kiss belonged to someone other than your partner, see dreams about cheating.
Kissing dreams that repeat with the same person usually follow the same person through the day: a message waited for, a meeting coming up, a conversation replayed. When the repeating partner is someone you have no feelings for, it is worth asking what they stand for, and whether that is something you are trying to bring closer.
A question to sit with
What would it mean to let that quality, the one the person in the dream carried, come closer in your waking life?
A dream book can tell you that Miller thought a kiss in the light was honest and a kiss in the dark was not. It can't tell you why the same face keeps leaning in, or why it happens only when you are far from home. That shows only when your dreams are recorded and kept together. Dreamlock, on the App Store for iPhone, is a private dream journal: it listens to your dream, paints it, and reads it with the old books, the psychologists and one question.
