What does it mean to dream about gold?
The English books glitter. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) read gold, in its "Coins" entry, as great prosperity and pleasure from travel, and made it the one plainly lucky metal among silver, copper and nickel. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) read receiving gold as success in all undertakings and paying it out as more friends.
But neither book trusts gold unconditionally. Miller's own "Gold" entry turns dark over loss, mining and gifts. And Artemidorus, whose Oneirocritica (2nd century) we cite in Friedrich Krauss's 1881 translation, set finding a treasure among dreams that are pleasant inside the dream and bad in their outcome. He read gold, like most things, by who was dreaming: a poor man's gold was not a rich man's. The books' split is the useful part: gold as reward, or gold as a test.
