The bus stop, the timetable that lies, the doors folding shut just as you arrive. A bus is the most ordinary of dream vehicles, and that is its meaning: it goes where it goes, stops where everyone else needs to stop, and waits for no one in particular.

What does it mean to dream about a bus?

Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) knew the bus by its older name. Under "Omnibus" it read being drawn through the streets in one as "misunderstandings with friends", with "unwise promises" made along the way. Under "Coach", riding in one denoted "continued losses and depressions in business", while driving one implied removal or business changes. The shared vehicle, for Miller, was a social risk before it was a journey.

The Asian books cited on this site have no bus. The 1908 Yume handan jikkensho, the 1906 Japanese translation of the Menglin xuanjie and the Chinese Zhougong dream book (1880 print) predate it. Their nearest scene is the shared boat: the 1908 book read sharing a boat with other people as trouble to come over one's dwelling, and the Zhougong book, from which the Meiji line descends, read the same scene as moving house. Both readings put the travellers' home at stake, not the voyage.

Catching it, missing it, ending up somewhere else

These are readings from the old dream books, reported as history; no dream is a forecast.

What does it mean to dream of missing the bus?

You run the last few metres and the bus pulls away, its back window full of faces that don't look round. Miller has no line for a missed bus; under "Cars" he read missing one as being foiled in an attempt to advance one's prospects. The modern reading is gentler: a chance that ran on a shared schedule, and the worry that the group moved on without you. It belongs with dreams about being late, where what you were carrying often matters more than the vehicle.

What does it mean to dream of a bus taking you somewhere unknown?

The route changes, the streets stop looking familiar, the driver doesn't answer. No book cited here has an entry for it. Psychologists hear direction handed to others: a job, a family plan or a relationship moving along a route you didn't pick, and the dream asking whether you noticed when it left the road you knew. If you stayed on board out of politeness, that detail is usually the one to keep.

What does it mean to dream of a bus crash?

The bus swerves, people fall against each other, glass breaks. No old book here has a bus accident. The Zhougong dream book (1880 print) read a boat or cart broken to pieces as inauspicious. Psychologists read the crash as shared momentum gone wrong: a group plan, a team or a household meeting a force no one on board was steering against. See also car crash dreams.

What does a bus dream mean psychologically?

Psychologists notice that bus dreams tend to accompany travelling on collective terms: one's progress bound to other people's stops, speeds and schedules. They cluster where individual direction has been ceded to a group, whether a workplace, a family or a plan made by committee. Unlike a car, the bus never takes the dreamer exactly where they want to go; unlike a train, it can still change its route. Waiting endlessly for a bus that never comes tends to read as agency deferred.

A question to sit with

Where in your life are you waiting for a group to move before you do?

Miller read the omnibus as a ride with misunderstandings. He couldn't know whether your bus always runs the route to your old school, or only appears in weeks when a decision is being made for you. That shows only when your dreams are recorded and kept together. Dreamlock, on the App Store for iPhone, is a private dream journal made for keeping them: it listens to the dream you record, paints it, and notices when the same bus stop comes back.
