You wake with your heart pounding, and the first thing you want to do is phone them. A dream in which someone you love dies is one of the hardest to shake, partly because it feels so real and partly because a small, superstitious part of us wonders whether it means something. The old dream books had a surprising amount to say about it, and almost none of them took it literally.

What does it mean when you dream about someone dying?
This page is about a living person dying in your dream. Your own death has its own page, dreams about death, and the people who have already died and come back to visit in dreams have theirs: dreams about a dead loved one.
The books split in two. The East Asian ones read the death of others mostly by contraries. The 1908 Japanese dream book, Karasawa Shōkaku's Yume handan jikkensho, gives the plainest line: to see a living person die means "吉事あるべし", there will be good things. The Chinese Zhou Gong dream list, in its 1880 print, says the same in seven characters: seeing others die, or dying oneself, is all auspicious. And the 1906 Japanese translation of the Chinese Menglin xuanjie goes furthest of all. Under the entry for being told of a death, it adds a general rule: "凡て死の夢は死にあらず", death dreams are never about death, and read them instead as advancement.
Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) is the gloomy exception. It read seeing others dying as general ill luck for the dreamer and the dreamer's friends, and seeing any of one's own people dead as "coming dissolution or sorrow". Yet even Miller attached a long note to his entry on death, warning that such dreams are "misleading and very confusing to the novice" and often stand for one thought being pushed out by another rather than for any real death.
So the old books disagreed about whether the dream was lucky or not, and agreed, surprisingly firmly, that it was not a forecast. That is also where modern psychology lands.
Who was dying
These are readings from the old dream books, reported as history; no dream is a forecast.
What does it mean to dream of a parent dying?
Your mother in a hospital bed, a phone call about your father, a funeral you somehow know is theirs. The 1908 Japanese dream book read parents or siblings dying as a sign that the dreamer would fall ill, a reading that moves the trouble away from the parent altogether, and the 1906 translation of the Menglin xuanjie gives exactly the same line. It is an old reading, and a cautious one; no book here read the dream as the parent's actual death. Psychologists usually hear two things in it. One is love and worry, especially when a parent is ageing. The other is the inner parent: the dream mother or father is often less the real person than the voice of care or authority the dreamer carries inside, and the dream tends to come when that inner relationship is shifting, as when a person takes on more responsibility or starts making choices a parent wouldn't.
What does it mean to dream of a friend dying?
The 1906 Japanese translation of the Menglin xuanjie is the only book here with a line for friends, and it is unusually honest: a dream of relatives or friends dying is "未だ吉凶知れず", good or bad not yet known. Psychologists read the dream friend through what that friend stands for. If they are the brave one, the funny one, the one who always calls, the dream may be about that quality fading from your own life, or about the friendship itself changing shape: a move, a new partner, a slow drift. It is worth asking which part of the friendship felt as though it was ending.
What does it mean to dream of your partner dying?
This may be the most frightening version of all, and it is common in strong, happy relationships. None of the old books cited here has an entry for a husband, wife or lover dying. Psychologists read the dream as attachment made visible: the fear of loss that comes with loving someone, often surfacing during a separation, an illness, a pregnancy or simply a busy stretch in which the two of you have seen little of each other. It can also mark a stage of the relationship ending, the early phase giving way to something steadier.
What does it mean to dream of a child dying?
For parents this dream is almost unbearable, and the old books read it with startling optimism. The 1908 Japanese dream book read an infant dying as "志望を達するの兆", one's hopes being achieved, and the 1906 translation of the Menglin xuanjie read it as a lawsuit being settled and wishes coming true. The Chinese Zhou Gong dream list, in its 1880 print, reads a child dying as "有添喜事", added happiness. Psychologists read the dream child mostly as a part of the dreamer: something young and new, a plan or a beginning, that feels fragile. For parents, the dream also carries the ordinary, constant worry that comes with loving a child, and it says nothing about the child's future.
News of a death, and the dead alive again
What does it mean to dream of a stranger dying?
Someone you don't know collapses in the street, or you learn in the dream that a person has died and feel strangely detached. The 1908 Japanese dream book's general line covers it: a living person dying read as good things to come. Psychologists read the stranger as the unknown part of oneself, a capacity or habit not yet recognised. A stranger dying can be an old way of being that is quietly ending without much fuss.
What does it mean to dream of being told that someone died?
No scene, only the news: a letter, a phone call, someone at the door. The 1906 translation of the Menglin xuanjie read being told that someone had died as long life for the dreamer, and a dream that named the date of a death as wishes coming true on that very day. The Zhou Gong list agrees in its line on people saying that someone has died: "人云死者得長命", long life. The 1908 book has one dark line here: a relative coming in person to announce a death it read as very bad. Taken as history, it shows how the old readers treated the messenger as part of the meaning. Psychologists hear in the dream a change you already sense but haven't quite taken in.
What does it mean to dream that someone who died is alive again?
A different dream, and a common one in grief: a person you know is dead walks in, alive and ordinary. Both Chinese-derived books read it the same way. The 1906 translation of the Menglin xuanjie read a dead person suddenly alive as a letter arriving from someone far away, and the Zhou Gong list says "死人復活主有信", the dead revived means news. For the psychology of these visits, see dreams about a dead loved one.
What does a dream of someone dying mean psychologically?
Psychologists are close to unanimous that these dreams are rarely about the literal death of the person in them. Death in dreams tends to accompany transition: something closing, and something else not yet formed. When it is someone else who dies, the question becomes what that person stands for, or what is changing between you.
Three readings come up most often. The first is the relationship itself changing: a child leaving home, a friend moving away, a parent growing frail, a partnership entering a new stage. The second is the quality the person embodies, which may be fading in your own life or which you are finally taking on for yourself. The third is plain love and worry. The mind rehearses what it fears most, and the people we fear losing are the people who matter.
The feeling in the dream is often the best clue. Grief points to something valued; relief, which dreamers sometimes feel and are ashamed of, often points to a burden or a role being set down rather than to any wish about the person. A calm dream, in which the death simply happens, often comes when a change has already been accepted somewhere below waking thought. If dreams like this regularly leave you distressed, that's worth mentioning to someone you trust. For your own death in a dream, see dreams about death; for the rituals afterwards, dreams about a funeral.
A question to sit with
If the person who died in your dream stands for something in your life rather than for themselves, what is it, and is it changing?
A dream book can tell you that the 1908 Japanese dream book read a living person's death as good news. It can't tell you why it was your sister in the dream, or why the dream came the week she moved abroad. That shows only when your dreams are recorded and kept together. If these dreams arrive often, our guide to recurring dreams looks at why the same scene comes back. Dreamlock, on the App Store for iPhone, is a private dream journal made for keeping them together: it listens to your dream, paints it, and notices when the same people come back.
