What does it mean to dream about someone who has died?
Artemidorus and Miller were not gentle about this dream, and they did not agree. Artemidorus, whose Oneirocritica (2nd century) we cite in Friedrich Krauss's 1881 German translation, read the dead by the relationship: seeing them meant the dreamer would come into a state matching how they had stood towards him in life. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) was starker: "To dream of the dead, is usually a dream of warning." Yet Miller also wrote a strikingly modern sentence: that a dead relative's voice in a dream is the dreamer's own higher self, taking a form the waking mind can hear.
