You don't know their name, you have never seen their face, and yet in the dream you trust them, or fear them, or follow them down a corridor without a second thought. Strangers are among the most common figures in dreams, and one of the hardest to shake in the morning: who was that?

What does it mean to dream about a stranger?
Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) files the stranger under "Alien", and its reading is about mood, not identity: "To dream of a stranger pleasing you, denotes good health and pleasant surroundings; if he displeases you, look for disappointments." Elsewhere the same book returns to strangers more than once. Embracing one, it says, means an unwelcome guest; the funeral of a stranger means unexpected worries. Miller never asks who the stranger is. He asks how the meeting felt.
The Japanese dream books are more concrete. The 1908 Japanese dream book Yume handan jikkensho has no entry for "a stranger" as such, but its chapter on people sorts unknown figures by what they do. A guest arriving from far away was read as good. Sitting down to talk with a man from a foreign country was read as losing money. Shouting at a person you don't know meant being deceived and slighted by others. The 1906 Japanese translation of the Chinese Menglin xuanjie adds one of the kindest lines in the genre: a person you don't know giving you a massage was read as great advancement to come.
The Chinese Zhougong dream book (1880 print) has no stranger entry either. Its nearest line, in the chapter on water, fire and thieves, reads being drawn along by a wicked man as illness arriving. So the old books mostly agree on one thing: the stranger is defined by the encounter. A figure who comes as a guest is read one way; a figure who confronts, leads or argues, another.
Who the stranger was
These are readings from the old dream books, reported as history; no dream is a forecast.
What does it mean to dream of an attractive stranger?
Someone you have never met, and in the dream you are close, at ease, sometimes falling for them. The 1908 Japanese dream book has a blunt line for this: for a man to dream of a woman, or a woman of a man, it read as inauspicious, with no exceptions given. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary is warmer about strangers in general, as long as they please you. Psychologists read the attractive stranger as a quality the dreamer wants close: tenderness, confidence, freedom. The dream often says more about what is missing than about romance.
What does it mean to dream of the same stranger again and again?
The same face, or the same presence, in dream after dream. No book cited here has an entry for a recurring stranger. In the Jungian reading this is the most telling version of all: a part of the self asking to be recognised, and coming back until it is. Psychologists notice that recurring strangers often become more familiar over time. For the wider pattern, see recurring dreams.
What does it mean when a stranger talks to you in a dream?
They stop you in the street, or sit beside you and start explaining something. The 1908 Japanese dream book read talking with a foreigner as losing money, and shouting at a person you don't know as being deceived. Miller's dictionary leaves it to mood once again. Psychologists listen to the words: what a stranger says in a dream is often something the dreamer already half knows and has not yet said aloud.
What the stranger did
What does it mean to dream of a stranger coming into your house?
A knock, or simply a figure already standing in the kitchen. The 1908 Japanese dream book read a guest arriving from far away as good, and a person you dislike arriving as illness and trouble. The house, in the psychological reading, is the self; a stranger inside it is something new that has already got past the door. Whether you welcomed them tends to mirror how you are handling a change that has arrived uninvited. See also dreams about a house.
What does it mean to dream of a stranger chasing you?
Footsteps behind you, a figure you can't quite see. The Zhougong dream book read being led along by a wicked man as illness arriving; it has no line for a chase. Psychologists treat this as the classic avoidance dream with a faceless pursuer: what chases matters less than the running. The pursuer often softens when the waking issue is faced. More in dreams about being chased.
What does a stranger dream mean psychologically?
This is Jung's territory. In the Jungian reading the stranger is the unmet self: qualities, capacities or impulses the dreamer has not yet recognised as their own. A stranger who frightens you is often something you have pushed away; a stranger who helps you is often something you could do yourself if you allowed it. Whether the figure menaces or helps tends to track how you relate to what you have disowned.
That is why the face matters less than the role. The same night can bring a guide, a rival and an intruder, all unknown and all built from the dreamer's own material. Psychologists notice that recurring strangers often become familiar over time, and that this is usually the point: the figure stops being strange once its quality has been recognised in waking life.
A question to sit with
If the stranger were a part of you that you haven't met yet, what would you call it?
A dream book can tell you that Miller read a pleasing stranger as good health. It can't tell you why the same faceless figure turns up in your dreams every time you change jobs, or why it has started to smile. That shows only when your dreams are written down and kept together. Dreamlock, on the App Store for iPhone, is a private dream journal made for keeping them: it listens to your dream, paints it, and notices when the same figures come back.
