What does it mean to dream about a tornado?
Miller and Artemidorus knew the tornado by older names: the whirlwind and the hurricane. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) gave "Tornado" a single line, reading being in one as disappointment and perplexity over "the miscarriage of studied plans" for making a fortune quickly, and then pointed the reader to "Hurricane", where the scenes are drawn in far more detail: the roar, the house, the debris.
Artemidorus, whose Oneirocritica (2nd century) we cite in Friedrich Krauss's 1881 German translation, grouped the whirlwind with the downpour and the storm as dangers and losses, and then made his usual exception by the dreamer's station: for slaves, the poor and people in difficulty, the same whirlwind meant release, since fine weather follows great storms.
The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) has no whirlwind at all. So the tornado's readings are mostly Miller's, and they share one pattern: the dreamer is not destroyed, but busy, straining, trying to save something.
