Bees in a dream bring their sound with them. Even before you see them, you hear the hum: in a hedge, at a window, inside the walls. The old dream books were warm toward bees, the way country people often are, and saved their caution for a single moment: the sting.

Variant What the old books read Source
A bee sting Loss or injury from a friendly source; wounds Miller 1901; Artemidorus
A swarm of bees Unrest, for all but farmers and beekeepers Artemidorus
Bees on your body Good for a leader, trouble for anyone else Artemidorus
A beehive Luck for everyone, oddly not for farmers Artemidorus
Honey Considerable wealth; a long and happy life Miller 1901; Golden Wheel 1862

What does it mean to dream about bees?

Miller's 1901 dream dictionary opens plainly: "Bees signify pleasant and profitable engagements." He then gives each reader their share: obedient subordinates for an officer, a fuller congregation for a preacher, more trade for business people, dutiful children for parents. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) was even shorter: "It is good and lucky to dream of bees", with good crops for the farmer and a good, wealthy husband for a young woman.

Artemidorus, in his Oneirocritica (2nd century; Krauss's 1881 translation), is more careful and more interesting. Bees, he said, are good for farmers and beekeepers, whose living they are. For everyone else he read each part of the bee separately: the hum as unrest, the sting as wounds. He also compared bees to a crowd or an army, because they follow a single leader.

So the English books see the hive's industry, and Artemidorus sees its crowd. None of the three mentions bees attacking the dreamer or killing a bee.

Stings and swarms

These are readings from the old dream books, reported as history — no dream foretells the future.

What does it mean to dream of being stung by a bee?

A sharp prick on the hand, the swelling that follows. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary read a bee sting as "loss or injury" from a friendly source, and his separate "Sting" entry read any insect sting as a foreboding of unhappiness. Artemidorus read the sting, for anyone but farmers and beekeepers, simply as wounds. Psychologists usually hear a small, sharp hurt: a remark from someone close that has not stopped smarting.

What does it mean to dream of a swarm of bees?

A swarm of bees — painting of honeybees drifting over wildflowers in the last amber light
A swarm of bees

A dark, humming cloud moving through the air. Artemidorus read the humming of bees as unrest for everyone except farmers and beekeepers, and likened a swarm to a crowd or an army moving under one leader. The modern reading often agrees: a swarm is many small pressures moving together, a busy office, a crowded family, a group whose mood can turn. Whether the swarm passed you by or came toward you matters.

What does it mean to dream of bees attacking you?

Bees chasing you across a field, and you can't outrun them. The old dream books have no reading for an attack by bees. Psychologists read it as being overwhelmed by many small demands at once, none of them dangerous alone but unbearable together. It often turns up in weeks of deadlines and messages, when every small thing seems to want a piece of you.

What does it mean to dream of bees on your body?

Bees crawling on your arms, settling in your hair. Artemidorus read bees settling on the dreamer's head as good for a general or a statesman, someone who leads crowds, but as trouble for anyone else, from the crowd or from soldiers. In modern terms bees on the body are often about closeness to something powerful and busy, and how calm you could stay while they walked on you.

Hives, honey and harm

What does it mean to dream of a beehive?

A beehive — painting of an old straw skep beehive lit by a lantern in a night garden
A beehive

An old straw hive in a garden, or a wooden box humming with life. Artemidorus read keeping bees and taking honey from them, the beekeeper's work, as luck for everyone alike, curiously, except farmers. The hive is the bee's best side in modern dreams too: order, community, shared work that adds up to something sweet. Psychologists often see it when your home or team is working well, or when you wish it would.

What does it mean to dream of honey?

Honey dripping from the comb, a jar glowing on the table. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary read seeing honey as considerable wealth and eating it as wealth and love; for lovers, a swift rush into marriage. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) read honey as "a long and happy life", and eating it as some great joy. In modern terms honey is reward: the sweetness that comes after long, patient work.

What does it mean to dream of killing a bee?

Swatting a bee, or finding one dead on the windowsill. The old dream books are silent on killing a bee. Psychologists read it as fighting back against something that threatens to sting, sometimes with relief, sometimes with the uneasy sense of having harmed something useful. Many people now feel protective toward bees while awake, and that guilt can carry into the dream.

What does a bee dream mean psychologically?

Psychologists tend to read bees through the two things everyone knows about them: they work, and they sting. A bee dream can be about productivity and belonging, about being one of many in a household, an office or a team, each doing their part. It can also be about the cost of that life, the busy hum that never stops, the sharp moment when someone in the group hurts you.

Jung, who wrote about insects in dreams as images of life at its most collective and least personal, would have noticed that bees are almost never alone. That is why the feeling in the dream matters so much. Calm bees at work in a garden usually go with a sense that life is busy but good. A swarm or an attack usually goes with pressure, too many demands at once. Honey, the oldest reward there is, often appears when something you worked hard for is finally ready.

A question to sit with

Whose hive are you working for right now, and do you get to taste the honey?

Miller can tell you what bees meant to a preacher in 1901. He can't tell you why bees fill your dreams every spring, or why they always gather at the same window. That pattern only appears when your own dreams are kept together. Dreamlock, on the App Store for iPhone, is a private dream journal built for it: it listens to your dream, paints it, and remembers the hum.
