The corridor narrows, the voices behind you get louder, and somehow you are fourteen again. Dreams of being bullied are among the most common unpleasant dreams adults report, and among the most stubborn: people who left school decades ago still find themselves back by the lockers, small and outnumbered. The old dream books never named bullying, but they had a great deal to say about being struck, mocked and humiliated.

What does it mean to dream about being bullied?
No dream book this site uses has an entry for bullying as such. The word, and the idea of it as a pattern rather than a single blow, are modern. What the books do have is a cluster of entries on being struck, insulted and treated as lowly, and on those they disagree sharply.
The Japanese reading comes from the Meiji era. The Yume handan jikkensho (1908), a Tokyo dream manual, groups its lines on striking and abuse together. To dream of being struck by someone, it says, is "losing one's own strength" (己の力を失ふ), while to strike someone else is gaining that person's strength. The 1906 Japanese translation of the Chinese Menglin xuanjie gives the same pair almost word for word, then adds an odder entry of its own: being beaten, it says, means that something lost will turn up again.
The Chinese Zhou Gong dream book, in its 1880 print, turns the first reading upside down. In its section on injuries, quarrels and blows, being hit by someone means gaining strength, and a line further on, being humiliated (被人凌辱) means coming into money. The next section adds that being treated with contempt is "great good fortune" in the Zhou Gong book's own words. Japanese folk speech had a proverb for this kind of reversal, "dreams go by opposites" (yume wa sakayume), and these lines are a clear case of it.
Miller's Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted (1901) sits in between. To "feel yourself abused", Miller wrote, was to be "molested in your daily pursuits by the enmity of others": a reading of ill will and interference rather than fortune. Under "Enemy" he added that being defamed by enemies threatened failure in one's work.
So the old books split three ways: losing strength, gaining strength, and being hindered by ill will. What none of them describes is the thing that makes a bullying dream distinctive, which is the group: the ring of faces, the laughter, the sense of having nowhere to go. That part belongs to the psychology, which follows the variants below.
Who was bullying you
These are readings from the old dream books, reported as history; no dream is a forecast.
What does it mean to dream of being bullied at school?
The old classroom, the old uniform, the same few faces. School is the setting most bullying dreams choose, even for dreamers who were never bullied there. No book cited here reads bullying at school, but Miller's 1901 dream dictionary has a line on dreaming that one is young and at school again: he read it as a time when sorrow and reverses make the dreamer long for "the simple trusts and pleasures of days of yore". Psychologists read school dreams as competence and belonging under review. The bullying version usually comes when adult life feels graded by a group: a new team, a family gathering, a room where everyone else seems to know the rules.
What does it mean to dream of being bullied by a stranger?
Faces you don't know, who seem to know exactly how to hurt you. No old book reads being bullied by a stranger. The nearest line runs the other way: the 1908 Yume handan jikkensho read cursing a stranger as being deceived and scorned by other people. In the Jungian reading, the dream stranger is often a part of the dreamer that has not yet been recognised. A stranger who mocks may be giving voice to a harsh inner critic, the one that says the things a real bully once said, long after the bully has gone.
What does it mean when someone who bullied you appears in a dream?
The name you had almost forgotten, the face exactly as it was. No book cited here reads the return of an old bully. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary comes closest with the schoolhouse: visiting the school of one's childhood, he wrote, showed that "discontent and discouraging incidents" overshadowed the present. Psychologists rarely read the old bully as being about the old bully. The figure usually returns when someone in the present produces the same feeling, and the mind reaches for the original file. The useful question is not "why them?" but "who made me feel like that this week?"
What does it mean to dream of your child being bullied?
Watching it happen and being unable to reach them is the detail parents remember. No book cited here has an entry for a child being bullied. In the Jungian reading, a child in danger in a dream is often a part of the dreamer: something young, new or vulnerable in oneself. Real parental worry is part of it too, especially around a change of school or a child who has gone quiet. Both readings can be true at once; the dream rarely asks you to choose.
What happened in the dream
What does it mean to dream of being hit or pushed around?
A shove in the corridor, a blow you see coming and cannot avoid. This is where the old books are richest, and where they disagree. The 1908 Yume handan jikkensho and the 1906 Yume handan both read being struck as losing one's own strength. The Zhou Gong dream book read being hit as gaining strength. Psychologists usually hear powerlessness made physical: the dream turns a feeling of being overruled, outvoted or overlooked into a body that is pushed and cannot push back.
What does it mean to dream of being laughed at or mocked?
The laughter is often the worst part: a whole room turning to look. The Zhou Gong dream book read being humiliated as coming into money, and being treated as lowly as great good fortune. The 1906 Yume handan read being mocked and deceived by one's own servants far less kindly: it took that dream as a sign of those below looking down on those above, and of a household at odds. Psychologists read mockery dreams as shame looking for a place to land, often after a small public mistake that waking life has already moved past.
What does it mean to dream of fighting back against a bully?
You finally turn around, shout, or hit back. The 1908 Yume handan jikkensho read striking someone as gaining that person's strength, and the same book read trading insults with someone as good, in its own word. Most dreamers wake from this version relieved, sometimes shaken by their own force. Psychologists hear a boundary being drawn: anger that waking life has kept polite, finally allowed a voice. For the wider family of conflict dreams, see dreams about fights.
What does a bullying dream mean psychologically?
Psychologists usually read bullying dreams as dreams of standing: where the dreamer stands in a group, and whether they are allowed to stand there at all. The bully is rarely the point. The point is the feeling the bully produces: small, watched, unable to leave. That feeling has a long memory, which is why the dream so often borrows the setting of adolescence, when belonging was most fragile.
Many bullying dreams follow a day when the dreamer felt targeted: criticism in front of others, a decision made without them, a message that landed like a push. Others come with no obvious trigger and simply replay old material, the way the mind revisits any experience that once felt dangerous. Both are ordinary. The dreams tend to ease when the waking situation is named, or when the old memory is finally talked through. If dreams regularly leave you distressed, that's worth mentioning to someone you trust.
The way the dream ends matters. Dreamers who run tend to be facing something they are still avoiding by day; for that pattern, see dreams about being chased. Dreamers who stand still and answer back tend to be closer to a decision than they think.
A question to sit with
Where in your life right now do you feel smaller than you are, and who taught you to feel that way first?
A dream book can tell you that the Meiji dream books read a blow as lost strength, and the Zhou Gong list as strength gained. It can't tell you why your bully always appears in the same stairwell, or only in the weeks before a performance review. That shows only when your dreams are recorded and kept together. If you're wondering whether reading dream meanings helps at all, we wrote an honest answer: should you stop reading dream meanings? Dreamlock, on the App Store for iPhone, is a private dream journal made for keeping them together: it listens to your dream, paints it, and notices when the same faces come back.
