You switch on the kitchen light and something dark runs for the gap under the fridge. Cockroach dreams stay with people for the same reason the real insect does: it is fast, it hides, and it comes back. It is also, surprisingly, one of the creatures the old dream books almost ignored.

What does it mean to dream about cockroaches?

The one classical entry comes from the Islamic dream manuals. Nablusi's Taʿṭīr al-anām, completed in 1659, gives the cockroach a single line: in a dream it signifies "a weak enemy". The Muntakhab, the collection attributed to Ibn Sirin, says the same in three words and files the cockroach among the small household pests, next to the termite, which it reads as a servant who steals the household's cloth little by little. Neither book describes a scene, a colour or a number of insects. The cockroach is an adversary, and not a dangerous one.

That is nearly all the old books have to say. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) has thousands of entries and none for the cockroach. Its nearest neighbours are "Bugs", read as "disgustingly revolting complications" in daily life, and "Beetles", read as poverty and small ills when they are on one's person. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) has no cockroach either, only vermin in general. In Japan, the two Meiji dream books this site uses, the 1908 Yume handan jikkensho and the 1906 Japanese translation of the Chinese Menglin xuanjie, have no entry under the old name for the insect, and neither does the Chinese Zhou Gong dream list.

The odd survivor is Naples. Giuseppe Rumeo's Nuova Smorfia (1866), the lotto dream list, gives "scarafaggio e scarafaggi", the cockroach in Neapolitan usage, the number 30. It is a number to play, recorded here as folk heritage; the list attaches no omen to it.

So when a website tells you that a cockroach dream means a windfall or a betrayal, it is not quoting an old dream book. It is improvising. What follows reports the readings that do exist, borrowed from the nearest entries where the books are silent, and then the psychology, which has more to say.

Where the cockroach was

These are readings from the old dream books, reported as history; no dream is a forecast.

What does it mean to dream of cockroaches in your house?

They come out of the drain, run along the skirting board, scatter when the cupboard opens. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) read vermin of any kind as ill luck and enemies, especially when they were in the house or near the fireplace; out of doors, it said, they were unimportant. Nablusi's weak enemy fits the same picture: someone close by, more nuisance than threat. The modern reading follows the geography. A cockroach in your own kitchen is trouble inside your private life, small but hard to get rid of.

What does it mean to dream of a cockroach on you?

One on your arm, on your pillow, in your shoe. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary, under "Beetles", read seeing them on one's person as "poverty and small ills", adding at once that killing them was good. The Chinese Zhou Gong dream list reads it the other way for insects in general: insects crawling over the body mean illness easing. Psychologists hear something that has got too close: an irritation, a habit or a person you can no longer keep at arm's length.

What does it mean to dream of a flying cockroach?

The moment it opens its wings and comes at your face is the one people remember. No book cited here has an entry for it. The psychological reading is about speed and surprise: a worry you had filed as small and slow suddenly behaving like something bigger.

What you did with it

What does it mean to dream of killing a cockroach?

Stamping, spraying, the shoe in the hand. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary read killing beetles as simply good, and the Golden Wheel Dream-Book called killing flies a very good omen. The 1908 Japanese dream book is less comfortable: it read swatting a mosquito and getting blood on one's hand as being hurt by someone. Psychologists usually hear relief, a nuisance finally dealt with, and sometimes the uneasy feeling that it was handled more harshly than it needed.

What does it mean to dream of a lot of cockroaches?

The floor moves. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) read a swarm of flies as many enemies; it has no line for a swarm of cockroaches. Psychologists read numbers as pressure: one cockroach is a detail, a hundred are a mood. The dream tends to come when small demands have been piling up faster than they can be cleared.

What does a cockroach dream mean psychologically?

Psychologists usually read insects as intrusion: things that creep in uninvited and multiply where attention lapses. The cockroach adds two things of its own. It hides, so the dream often carries the sense of something that is there even when you can't see it. And it survives, so the dream often carries the sense of something you have dealt with before and will have to deal with again.

The revulsion is usually the point. Disgust in a dream tends to mark something you want kept out of your life: a behaviour, a person, a thought you don't like having. The dreams where the cockroach is caught, or simply leaves, tend to come when that boundary is being restored. For the wider family, see dreams about insects; for the other creature of the kitchen at night, dreams about rats.

A question to sit with

What small problem have you dealt with more than once, only to find it back again in the same place?

A dream book can tell you that Nablusi thought the cockroach was a weak enemy. It can't tell you why yours always appears in the flat you moved out of, or only in the weeks before a deadline. That shows only when your dreams are recorded and kept together. If you're wondering whether reading dream meanings helps at all, we wrote an honest answer: should you stop reading dream meanings? Dreamlock, on the App Store for iPhone, is a private dream journal made for keeping them together: it listens to your dream, paints it, and notices when the same creatures come back.
