An egg is small, and in a dream it is often held very carefully: carried in two hands, found in a nest, dropped at the worst moment. It is also one of the few symbols the old dream books read almost entirely in hope. Miller's entry on eggs is a cheerful one, and the Golden Wheel Dream-Book saw children in them.

| Rotten eggs | Loss of property and degradation; disgrace | Miller 1901; Golden Wheel 1862 |
| A crate of eggs | Profitable speculations | Miller 1901 |
| Bird eggs | Legacies from distant relations | Miller 1901 |
What does it mean to dream about eggs?
Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) gives eggs a short, busy entry, and nearly everything in it points to gain: a nest of eggs is "wealth of a substantial character", a crate of eggs is profitable speculation, bird eggs are legacies from distant relations. Even broken eggs, the scene most people fear, he read as fortune ready to shower the dreamer with gifts, as long as the eggs were fresh.
The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) read eggs through family. Married people who dreamed of eggs, it said, would have many children; a newly married woman finding a nest full of eggs would have twins or triplets. Rotten things of every kind it read as sickness, with a single exception: rotten eggs, which it read as disgrace.
Where the books part is useful. Miller keeps his warnings for what the dreamer does with the eggs: eating them, getting spattered, finding them rotten. The egg itself is almost always good news. Neither book says anything about a double yolk, hatching, cooking, or eggs of a colour.
What you did with the eggs
These are readings from the old dream books, reported as history — no dream foretells the future.
What does it mean to dream of finding eggs?

A nest in the hedge, eggs hidden in straw, more than you expected. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary read finding a nest of eggs as wealth of a substantial kind, happiness among the married and many children, and for women many and varied love affairs. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) read a newly married woman finding a nest full of eggs as twins or triplets. Psychologists hear something discovered rather than earned: a resource, a talent, a possibility that was there all along.

What does it mean to dream of eating eggs?
A plain breakfast, eggs on a plate. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary read eating eggs, unusually for his entry, as a warning: "unusual disturbances threaten you in your home". It is one of the few plainly unfavourable lines in a mostly cheerful entry. The modern reading is more ordinary: nourishment, routine, taking in something simple. How the meal felt, comforting or somehow wrong, tells you more than the eggs.
Broken and rotten eggs
What does it mean to dream of broken eggs?

The carton slips, the shell cracks, yolk on the floor. Most dreamers wake from this one expecting the worst, and Miller's 1901 dream dictionary said the opposite: broken eggs, if fresh, meant fortune ready "to shower upon you her richest gifts", and a lofty spirit that would make the dreamer beloved. Only a nest of broken or bad eggs, under "Nest", he read as disappointment. The modern reading hears a fragile plan exposed, which is not always the same as ruined.

What does it mean to dream of rotten eggs?
The smell is often what people remember. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary read rotten eggs as "loss of property and degradation", and being spattered with eggs as riches of doubtful origin. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862), which read rotten things of every other kind as sickness, read handling rotten eggs as disgrace. Psychologists hear something that has been kept too long: a plan left waiting until it spoiled, or a secret that has started to show.
How many eggs, and whose
What does it mean to dream of a crate or basket of eggs?
A full crate, a basket brimming, more than you could carry without dropping some. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary read seeing a crate of eggs as engaging in profitable speculations, his only reading of eggs by number. The modern reading keeps the abundance and adds the worry: many possibilities at once, each one fragile, and the question of how carefully you can carry them all.
What does it mean to dream of bird eggs?
Small speckled eggs in a nest, blue or pale, found high in a tree. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary read bird eggs as legacies from distant relations, or gain from an unexpected rise in staple products. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862), under "Birds' Nests", counted finding a nest good, but a nest with neither eggs nor birds a great disappointment. Psychologists hear something wild and not yet yours: a hope that belongs to the future. More birds in dreams about birds.
What does an egg dream mean psychologically?
Psychologists read the egg as the plainest image of potential: something complete but not yet begun, protected by a shell that is also its weakest point. That double sense (promise and fragility) is why egg dreams so often come in seasons of beginnings: a new relationship, a pregnancy hoped for or feared, a business idea, a move. The egg in the dream is often the thing you are keeping safe until it is ready.
The emotional tone tells you which half of the image is active. Finding and holding eggs calmly tends to go with anticipation. Dropping, cracking or losing them tends to go with anxiety about a plan or a person you feel responsible for. The old books' optimism about broken eggs is worth remembering here: a cracked shell is also how anything gets out.
A question to sit with
What are you carrying carefully right now, and what would it take for it to be ready to hatch?
Miller can tell you what a crate of eggs meant in 1901. He can't tell you why your eggs are always in your grandmother's kitchen, or why they break in the weeks before a deadline. That kind of pattern appears only when your own dreams are kept together. Dreamlock, on the App Store for iPhone, is a private dream journal built for it: it listens to your dream, paints it, and remembers what you were carrying.
