What does it mean to dream about being pregnant?
The two English books read the same dream in opposite directions. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) read a woman dreaming she was pregnant as unhappiness with her husband and unattractive children, a harsh line he softened only for women who really were pregnant. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) read a woman pregnant "when she is not" as a sign of special good fortune: a handsome present, or a lucky deal of her husband's that she would share in.
Artemidorus, whose Oneirocritica (2nd century) we cite in Friedrich Krauss's 1881 translation, is the surprise. He discussed the dream as a man's. For a poor man it meant goods and money in abundance, growing as a belly grows; for a rich man, trials and worries. None of the three reads it as news about the body. What it is about, they read by who was dreaming.

For a woman without a partner, the dream can feel exposing. Miller read it harshly: "For a virgin, this dream omens scandal and adversity." The Golden Wheel Dream-Book read the same dream as marriage, coming almost as suddenly as the dream itself. The books' split mostly records their age's anxieties about reputation. Psychologists ask what new thing you are ready, or not ready, to make public.

For someone really pregnant, the dream sits very close to home. Miller added a reassuring line for exactly this: a woman really pregnant who had the dream could expect, in his reading, a safe delivery and a swift recovery of strength. It is the only wholly favourable line in his entry. Psychologists see the mind rehearsing what the body is already doing, and hopes and fears about the birth finding a stage.

Birth shifts the dream from waiting to arrival. Miller read giving birth as fortunate circumstances and the safe delivery of a handsome child. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book read a woman about to have a child as a rich legacy or other good fortune. What does a pregnancy dream mean psychologically?
The psychological reading uses one word: incubation. Dream-pregnancy, in dreamers of any sex, tends to accompany potential that is developing but not yet ready: a project, a decision, a move, a version of yourself still forming. The dream borrows the strongest image the mind has for "real, but not finished."
The mood of the dream does work the imagery alone doesn't: anxiety in a pregnancy dream often mirrors ambivalence about what's coming, and labour imagery tends to appear when the change is near. Which raises the useful question, not "what does pregnancy mean?" but "what, right now, am I carrying?"
