Fire dreams burn brighter than most. People wake remembering the colour of the flames, the heat, whether they ran toward it or away. And the three old books we cite asked fire much the same first question: was it where it belonged, or was it loose?

What does it mean to dream about fire?
Fire is where the three books disagree most usefully. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) was remarkably cheerful: "Fire is favorable to the dreamer if he does not get burned," he wrote, and most of his long entry follows that line, down to reading a burning home as a happy one. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) drew its line by whose house burned: your own meant good fortune, another's meant sorrow.
Artemidorus, whose Oneirocritica (2nd century) we cite in Friedrich Krauss's 1881 German translation, cared about size and cleanliness. Citing the prophetess Phemonoe, he read household fire seen small and clean as good fortune, and a large, unbridled fire as disaster. Rooms burning in bright flame without falling he read as prosperity; rooms smouldering in sooty smoke, as ruin.
So Miller's great conflagration meant success, and Artemidorus's great fire meant enemies at the gates. Both were writing records of their own fears and hopes, not forecasts.

Buckets, a hose, flames beaten back. Miller read a man fighting fire unburned as much work and worry over his business, and in his "Flame" entry fighting flames meant giving one's best effort and energy to build wealth. A match, kindling, the first flame catching. Miller read kindling a fire as "many pleasant surprises" and visits to distant friends, one of the few fire scenes in his entry with no condition attached. The modern ear hears a beginning: energy you are choosing to start, a project or a feeling you are willing to let burn.
What does it mean to dream of getting burned?
The heat reaches skin. Miller, surprisingly, wrote that "Burns stand for tidings of good": a hand burned in clear fire meant purity of purpose, though being overcome by the fire meant treachery by supposed friends. Artemidorus disagreed sharply and read burning feet as loss and ruin of property. Psychologists hear the plainer lesson: something got too close.

The office, the shop, the warehouse alight. Miller read a businessman watching his store burn as "a great rush in business and profitable results", though seeing its ruins afterward meant ill luck until unforeseen good fortune came. The modern reading hears pressure at work running hot, and sometimes a wish to see the whole thing burn down and start over.
What does it mean to dream of a forest fire?
A whole hillside in flame, too big to fight. The old books cited here have no forest fire. The modern reading hears something vast and out of any one person's control: news, a family crisis, a mood across a whole season. Where you stood, watching or fleeing, usually says more than the fire.
Size and smoke
What does it mean to dream of a fire contained in a hearth or candle?
The gentlest fire dream: a candle on a sill, a steady hearth. Artemidorus, in his general fire chapter, read a bright, clean fire on the hearth as prosperity, since no fire burns where no food is cooked, and a hearth gone out as want. Psychologists read contained fire as harnessed drive: warmth with a container round it.
What does it mean to dream of a huge, spreading fire?
Here the books split hardest. Miller read a large conflagration as safe voyages for sailors, honours for writers and unlimited success in business, provided no lives were lost. Artemidorus read an immeasurably great fire in the sky as enemies advancing, barrenness and famine. Psychologists hear a situation or feeling outgrowing its container.
What does it mean to dream of smoke but no fire?
Smoke drifts in and you can't find the flame. Miller read smoke as being perplexed with doubts and fears, and being overcome by it as flattery from dangerous people. The Golden Wheel read a smoke-filled room as an angry controversy, and said lovers who dreamed of smoke "will nose out the fire when they next meet". The modern ear hears tension you can sense but can't yet trace.
What does a fire dream mean psychologically?
Psychologists read fire as intensity: anger, desire, urgency, transformation. Like Artemidorus, they ask what the fire is doing rather than whether it appeared. Contained fire often accompanies harnessed drive, a project running hot but under your hand. Spreading fire tends to show up when a situation or a feeling is outgrowing control. Watching something burn is often a letting-go in progress, welcome or not.
In the Jungian reading fire is transformation, the heat that destroys and renews. The useful move is to name the heat. Somewhere in waking life something is burning.
