Fish dreams are quiet ones, mostly: no chase, no falling, just something gleaming under the surface. Yet the three old dream books we cite graded fish with real care, because to their readers a fish was a plain picture of livelihood: food and fortune pulled out of deep water by patience and luck.

What does it mean to dream about fish?
The three books agreed on the direction: fish meant gain. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) read catching fish as "a sign of excellent good fortune, particularly if you haul up large ones", and an abundance of fish as money received. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary (Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted) read fish in clear streams as the favour of the rich and powerful, and his fish entries turn dark only for dead or decayed fish and fishing that fails.
Artemidorus, whose Oneirocritica (2nd century) we cite in Friedrich Krauss's 1881 German translation, was the most exacting. He read a big catch as good for nearly everyone, except teachers of rhetoric, who would find no audience, because the fish is mute. He sorted fish by size, and small bony fish meant not gain but ill humour; he even read their colours, with brightly coloured fish standing for deceit and snares.
So the books share an instinct worth keeping: read the fish's condition and the water around it. Clear water, a heavy net, a fresh fish carried the kind reading; dead fish, empty nets and small fry shaded it.

What does it mean to dream of catching fish?
The line goes taut, and something silver comes up. The Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) read catching fish as excellent good fortune, and fishing without a bite as failure in an undertaking. Miller's 1901 dream dictionary put it plainly: "To dream of catching fish is good. If you fail to catch any, it will be bad for you." It was in your hands, and then it wasn't. None of the books reads the escape as its own scene, but the Golden Wheel Dream-Book (1862) came close: fish falling off the hook, in its fish entry, meant troublesome fortune. Psychologists hear the thought that got away, a nearly-had chance your mind is still turning over. Dreams replay the slip; they don't schedule the next one.

The smell arrives before the sight. In his "Fish Market" entry, Miller read visiting the market as competence and pleasure, but seeing decayed fish there as distress that would come disguised as happiness. It is a sharp line: in modern terms, something that promised nourishment, a deal or a connection, has gone off behind a pleasant face.

What does a fish dream mean psychologically?
Psychologists reach for the same picture the dream books did, aimed inward: contents surfacing from deep water. A fish is the classic image for material rising from below awareness, an idea, a feeling, a memory that is almost catchable. Jung called water the commonest symbol for the unconscious, which makes a fish something the unconscious is carrying.
Catching the fish tracks with an insight landed; the one that slips away is the thought lost in the shallows of waking. And shoals tend to swim through dreams in seasons of plenty, real or hoped for.
